Article Licensing

[edit]

Hi, I've started a drive to get users to multi-license all of their contributions that they've made to either (1) all U.S. state, county, and city articles or (2) all articles, using the Creative Commons Attribution-Share Alike (CC-by-sa) v1.0 and v2.0 Licenses or into the public domain if they prefer. The CC-by-sa license is a true free documentation license that is similar to Wikipedia's license, the GFDL, but it allows other projects, such as WikiTravel, to use our articles. Since you are among the top 1000 Wikipedians by edits, I was wondering if you would be willing to multi-license all of your contributions or at minimum those on the geographic articles. Over 90% of people asked have agreed. For More Information:

To allow us to track those users who muli-license their contributions, many users copy and paste the "DualLicenseWithCC-BySA-Dual" template into their user page, but there are other options at Template messages/User namespace. The following examples could also copied and pasted into your user page:

Option 1
I agree to multi-license all my contributions, with the exception of my user pages, as described below:
DualLicenseWithCC-BySA-Dual

OR

Option 2
I agree to multi-license all my contributions to any U.S. state, county, or city article as described below:
DualLicenseWithCC-BySA-Dual

Or if you wanted to place your work into the public domain, you could replace "DualLicenseWithCC-BySA-Dual" with "MultiLicensePD". If you only prefer using the GFDL, I would like to know that too. Please let me know what you think at my talk page. It's important to know either way so no one keeps asking. -- Ram-Man (comment| talk) 18:27, Dec 8, 2004 (UTC)

I was literally on the cusp of altering 'season' to 'series' when you did it for me. I was all confused for a moment there. To quote Phil Collins, we are two hearts, believing in just one mind. -Ashley Pomeroy 21:05, 15 Dec 2004 (UTC)

I was thinking that 30 days seems a bit much for a shared ip address of an educational institution (216.11.0.0/16 range assigned to Oakland Schools), especially considering that they've only had two warnings, the last one was a month ago, although they did make some changes earlier today to the George W. Bush page and weren't warned then. It's just my opinion that 30 days seems an awful long time to ban a whole school for; although they're likely to go on their holiday break shortly and won't notice it for most of the month. It's not like you have to justify your actions to me, I just wanted you to know that I don't agree with the strength of your decision, I do agree with your right to do it and the basic type of decision made. --Kyrin\talk 00:10, 2004 Dec 17 (UTC)

Tony Blair's Schooldays

[edit]

whats wrong with the true quotes from Blair's ex - schoolmasters???

Do u need references? I can provide - from more than one source...i. e. not just today's Guardian - or was it that the text appeared to be too close to the actual text that appeared in todays Guardian (Catherine Bennet). If so, then fair enough, but I will try and source at least three independant sources if you prefer. Please post a follow - up to this post so I can see where I am going wrong, or email me

(skrabbins AT hotmail DOTCOM)

thanx!

A verifiable citation of where the quotes came from would be useful! Sorry, but a first contribution from an anonymous user on a contentious subject is likely to get considered as POV trolling if it's not obvious where the contribution was sourced. Have you considered creating an account? It'll get a fair bit more leeway, and let people leave you messages like this :-) -- Arwel 00:22, 7 Jan 2005 (UTC)

[edit]

Yeah, I think I might have misunderstood my source. It seemed that it was a person lower on the ladder who kinda belayed the order to murder the forgers. So one way he tried to do it was to talk them into forging the 20 dollar bill. It seems that it didn't last as long as he hoped, an somebody else talked the SS out of killing the artists later.

Coinage specifications

[edit]

I gather you have done a lot of the writing on British coinage, and thus are probably responsible for the virtually exclusive use of metric units in describing specifications.Of course until quite recently they were never the units that the Mint used in determining coin specifications, and the implication that they were,in describing changes in weight and dimensions that took place long ago,is unsettling.I don't have a good reference source for the weights in grains and dimensions in fractional inches, but their inclusion in the articles would be very, very welcome. --Louis Epstein/le@put.com/12.144.5.2 22:49, 12 Jan 2005 (UTC)

Actually, no, the dimensions and weights of the current British coinage were given in metric here long before I discovered Wikipedia. As to the articles I have written, the dimensions and weights are obtained from Coincraft's Standard Catalogue which is probably the most easily obtainable detailed reference work on English and UK coins, and which gives such information exclusively in metric. I gather from your ISP name that you're probably in the US, and thus have a liking for the old units, but I have to say that although I was taught inches in primary school 40 years ago they're not much used now, and grains and troy pounds mean absolutely nothing to me. Regards, -- Arwel 23:44, 12 Jan 2005 (UTC)
Interesting. There must be a reference work somewhere that gives the dimensions that were actually used when the coins were made. The occurrence in articles of metric specifications even in periods before the metric system existed is especially ridiculous.Anyway,I may look for these specifications somewhere,if not I hope someone else does...and I hope inclusion of them in the articles will not be resented or reverted.--L.E./le@put.com/12.144.5.2 23:55, 12 Jan 2005 (UTC)
I found some grain specifications and enormously increased the old article on Groat. Also,I had occasion to revert your change to Maundy money because it doesn't matter whether the Sovereign's birthday is before or after Maundy Thursday, the age the Sovereign turns that calendar year is the relevant number.Check the history.--L.E./le@put.com/12.144.5.2 01:52, 13 Jan 2005 (UTC)

Hi Arwel. This is asking for a bit of a memory stretch here - but in June 2003 you wrote that there are complete records of all British hangmen from the 1500s to 1964. Do you know where these records are held and if they are publicly accessible? I'm trying to find something on-line, but any hints would be appreciated. Thanks -- sannse (talk) 15:35, 14 Jan 2005 (UTC)

I guess that they would be at the Public Records Office in Kew, or the National Archives as it's called these days. Try putting "Executioner" or "Hangman" into the catalogue search. -- Arwel 16:53, 14 Jan 2005 (UTC)
Thanks Arwel, that's given me a good start. -- sannse (talk) 21:15, 14 Jan 2005 (UTC)

Five Pound Coins

[edit]

I added mention of the post-1990 Pistrucci-reverse gold issues to the article on the pre-decimal five pound coins, since the other one concerned itself entirely with the variable-reverse "Crown" commemoratives only incidentally copied in gold.See http://www.taxfreegold.co.uk/fivepoundsinfo.html and its associated pages for more on these, which didn't seem covered anywhere.--L.E./12.144.5.2 04:53, 16 Jan 2005 (UTC)

Welsh article

[edit]

Hi Arwel, are you an admin on the Welsh wikipedia? I don't know Welsh myself but cy:Mali 'r Mail Arglwyddes is almost certainly a very bad machine translation. The same article was machine-translated into various other languages, which have all been deleted by now, so it should probably be deleted from cy: as well. Adam Bishop 20:07, 16 Jan 2005 (UTC)

Adam, you're quite right, but I've listed it on cy:Wicipedia:Tudalennau amheus so all the other users can have a laugh first! I've never come across something that purports to be machine-translated into Welsh before, we sometimes get dictionary translations which are almost as good. I had to take a look at en:Molly, the Mail Lady to try to make sense of it -- at least they got Molly --> Mali right, but Arglwyddes is Lady as in aristocrat, and "Mail" is "Post" anyway, not forgetting that the word order is different! -- Arwel 21:20, 16 Jan 2005 (UTC)

Stuff

[edit]

There are two things:

Firstly: Have you noticed that User:Owain is adding "such and such place is in the traditional county of XXX" to loads of Welsh town articles. He claims it is consistant with the counties policy, I've told him it isn't but he doesn't seem to be taking any notice. I just thought I'd allert you to it.

Secondly: I was thinking of making a map of the West Coast Main Line at some point. Only I'm not entirely sure about whether the line from Crewe to Stoke-on-Trent via Alsager is considered part of the WCML, I think it is but I'm not entirely sure. I'm also unsure about whether the line from Carstairs to Edinburgh is part of the WCML. I was wondering if you would know. G-Man 21:44, 31 Jan 2005 (UTC)

[edit]

What was your reason for reverting my correction on this article yesterday? Do you not understand what "former" and "latter" mean?

New ship table template

[edit]

I've spent the last few days working on a new ship table template to enable us to centralise the editing of things like weapons outfits for a particular class of ships in one template (so with the Fletchers or Gearings or other big classes you only have to edit in one place to alter a mistake rather than in dozens or hundreds). Please have a look at the WikiProject Ships page's talk section and see what you think. I haven't written the instructions for using it yet, and I want to see whether there are any table cells people would like me to include that aren't present yet. There are two example tables, one with all the optional cells present, and the other with some excluded. David Newton 14:06, 5 Feb 2005 (UTC)

Caernarfon Castle in pictures

[edit]

Arwel - Just a query why you needed to move the images around on the Caernarfon Castle article? They satisfied my aesthetic nature when we had the west view to the left and what is the east view to the right with the text flowing down the centre. There was a degree of symmetry, and a layout that was pleasing to the eye. The current layout looks cramped and awkward. Incidentally, the recursive link was there because I have had images used elsewhere by a simple copy and paste exercise of the image tag that then ensures a link back to the originating article.
Velela 10:38, 7 Feb 2005 (UTC)

I moved the pictures around because the page looked awkward - although they were the same width, the view from the west is not as high and consequently it didn't look particularly symmetrical. It's actually fairly rare on Wikipedia to find pictures on both sides of the page, and most have pictures on the right. -- Arwel 10:50, 7 Feb 2005 (UTC)

Worldcon

[edit]

Yeah, I had forgotten about the return to the two-year cycle. Oooops. Do you know how this will change the bid cycle for NASFiCs? Is NASFiC going to a one year bid cycle, or will NASFiC bids be run provisionally in parallel with non-NA Worldcon bids? Or are they doing away with NASFiC entirely (I recall there being some sentiment behind that approach as well)? --Ray Radlein 19:48, Feb 13, 2005 (UTC)

I don't know for sure. The 2007 site is being chosen in 2005 anyway... -- Arwel 20:14, 13 Feb 2005 (UTC)

Dog show news

[edit]

You're right about it probably belonging in United States current events. The challenge is that, after a year on Wikipedia, I had no idea there was even such a place! I occasionally browse the main page and Current events and I never realized, for whatever reason, that not all current events were listed under Current events. Makes me wonder who else is missing it. But I have no suggested solutions. Anyway, thanks (this isn't a criticism of you). Elf | Talk 21:00, 16 Feb 2005 (UTC)

Cardiff Arms Park

[edit]

Cynnar dda Arwel, Any reason why you reverted my changes to Cardiff Arms Park? You're going to make stub-sorting far harder if you revert correct changes. UK-struct-stub, for buildings and structures in the UK, is a subcategory of both UK-geo-stub and struct-stub, and is a more specific stub category than either. All you did was took the article out of its specialist category and put it into the two parents of that category. Please don't do that! Grutness|hello? 00:32, 18 Feb 2005 (UTC)

Bore da, Grutness. Did you actually look at the version of the article I reverted? It was terrible - misformatted text, bolded text in the wrong place, etc. I just reverted that to get back to a decent version, knowing that someone would come along to fix the categories later if needed... -- Arwel 01:10, 18 Feb 2005 (UTC)
Ah...no, I didn't - that explains it! Sorry about that. Good thing I simply changed the stub again rather than doing a "real" revert! Grutness|hello?

Blocking of User:Verdigras13

[edit]

I was browsing the blocklist, and noticed you blocked Verdigras13 (talkcontribs), with the reason "Vandalism: - replacement of Wikipedia logo by Autofellatio.jpg on Wikipedia". Curious, I looked up the change [1][2]. Notice the only thing changed is from "Vandalism is not a persistent problem" to "Vandalism is a persistent problem" -- a minor act of vandalism which would usually only warrant a revert and a on the user talk page. The real vandalism was the previous change [3] by Robburt (talkcontribs), who was not blocked.

I understand it's easy to confuse (mediawiki seems to annoyingly mix the most recent changes to an article when someone made a edit between when it creates the link to the last edit on recent changes and when you open it). I'm also not discussing the merits of an indefinite block for a single act of vandalism on a normal article. However, I think it would be a good idea to fix the mistake – unblocking the wrongly blocked user, and blocking the real vandal.

cesarb 02:15, 5 Mar 2005 (UTC)

 • Oops! Yes, you're right, I was caught out by the second piece of vandalism -- now corrected. -- Arwel 02:35, 5 Mar 2005 (UTC)

Shipman

[edit]

I believe that the wikipedia news for the date on or the day before I originally added that fact is where I saw the report that the investigation never really ended and more and more cases are being attributed to him by the judge in charge. The man may have killed more than 500 people, and the inquiry you cite almost certainly says that they can't tell about many of them; new evidence is found all the time; so it's irrational to believe they made a perfect adjudication of every case. And the amount of money spent on the investigation is completely irrelevant for logical and persuasive purposes. Blair P. Houghton 16:47, 5 Mar 2005 (UTC)

Wait. found it. Will add link to stat on Harold Shipman page. Blair P. Houghton 17:02, 5 Mar 2005 (UTC)

The Wikipedia news you cite is referring to the 6th and final report of the Shipman Inquiry chaired by Dame Janet Smith, whose report I cited directly - www.the-shipman-inquiry.org.uk/images/sixthreport/chapter/SHIP06_PSUM_1.pdf paragraph 28. Only the Daily Telegraph report says that the count is precisely 284 and they seem to have calculated the figure using their own selection of which deaths to count, the report itself says "about 250" although she only positively identified 218. Yes, there can be no certainty of exactly how many he killed, especially more than 30 years after some of the events, but the Inquiry is in the best position to judge. The first report, in July 2002, www.the-shipman-inquiry.org.uk/fr_page.asp?id=3 (Summary) identified 215 victims when he practiced in Todmorden and Hyde. The final report investigated his earlier period of work at the hospital in Pontefract. -- Arwel 17:21, 5 Mar 2005 (UTC)

Edit war on Rangers/Celtic/Old Firm

[edit]

Hi - I noticed you had a big say in the lock down on the Rangers F.C., Celtic F.C. and Old Firm articles before. There seems to be an edit/reversion war in progress on these pages, and User:AlistairMcMillan seems to be holding the fort on these. I am a bit unsure of entering the revert war myself, and the anonymous users/IPs are creating chaos in the articles, so I am basically looking for an admin's eye on these articles.
